Sentence Variety

  • IC: Independent clause = Subject + Verb + Full idea
  • DC: Dependent clause = Subordinating conjuction (SC) +S + V + incomplete idea
  • Phrase: Incomplete idea which can start with a preposition, modifier or a participle.

1. Phrase + IC
In 2006, I started teaching at CSL
Being interested in teaching, I started working at CSL.

2. SCDC + IC
When (SC) I started teaching, I really liked it.
Since (SC) I've been here, I have taught several courses.

CC: Coordinating Conjuction (FANBOYS)

3. IC + CCIC

There are 3200 students at CSL, and most of them are girls.

There are 3200 students at CSL, but they are no there at the same time.

There are 3200 students at CSL, so the CEGEP is very popular.

4. IC semicolon(;) IC

Some students study arts; others study science.

5. IC + semicolon(;) + AC/IC

The arts program at CSL is good; however, the music program is better.

  1. In 1991, my mother gave me birth.
  2. Since the day I was born, I have not moved houses very often.
  3. I've been living in four different places, and almost always in the same city.
  4. Some like changes; others prefer to stay in the same place.
  5. I'm comfortable at home; however, I'm excited to go on my own.
